Things Worth Knowing!
Since the publication in the Official Gazette dated September 5, 2012, the Spanish Royal Decree on the Professional Certification in Instruction in Yoga and requirements for access to the same, there have continued to spread erroneous interpretations of the legal text that, far from shedding light on the subject, may confuse practicing professionals and students in training.
What is Professional Certification in Instruction in Yoga?
The recognition and accreditation of your work experience in Spain, as in other European countries before, has established a system of professional recognition – the evaluation of the knowledge acquired throughout your professional life.
Thus, recognition of skills is one of the measures that have been developed to assess the knowledge gained through work experience or through non-formal education.
The publication in the Official Gazette of the Certificate of Competence (BOE) requires further development by official invitation of the competent authorities.
What is a Professional Competence?
It is the knowledge and skills that allow the exercise of a professional activity. Professional Competence is having the ability to undertake the tasks and activities required by your profession or job.
Therefore, professional competence includes not only the technical expertise to exercise certain skills, plus the attitude to implement them according to the professional context.
The set of skills is called professional qualification.
What is The Professional Qualification?
The competences of a profession or employment that can be acquired through different types of training or through work experience.
The importance of obtaining a professional qualification is given by the need to regulate the exercise of a professional activity, unifying knowledge, skills, training and experience are evaluated and accredited by competent authorities.
Each qualification is assigned a general competition that:
• defines the Professional functions and duties
• describes the environment or professional field of activity
• indicates the labour sector and rightful jobs to be accessed
Professional qualifications are grouped into 26 occupational families and five levels of qualifications, depending on the degree of complexity, as established by the criteria of the European Union.
And Instruction in Yoga?
Instruction in Yoga fits into the professional family of Physical and Sports Activities and carries a qualification level 3, which provides proficiency in:
• mastering some techniques that can be executed independently
• responsibility for monitoring the teaching and practice of specialized activities
• understanding the fundamentals of the training process
How do you get The Professional Qualification ?
Accrediting learning and providing work experience
The Spanish authorities set the ‘professional skills’ of each qualification, dividing them into units of competence that are associated with training modules and are the reference for the professional certificate.
That is, a person with a specific and relevant employment and social experience, can obtain an official qualification, despite not having received the relevant teachings in a training center.
What is The Professional Accreditation?
Accreditation (La Acreditación Profesional) is the learning assessment and recognition and certification, regardless of how they were acquired.
In general, when talking about systems of accreditation, one refers to the assessment processes under which it is identified, recognized and certified that a person has certain competencies in relation to a degree or certificate, regardless of how obtained.
Educational proposals are generally for adults who have passed the age of compulsory schooling; workers who have been trained by their own experience and that have acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes to perform a job.
Who gives the accreditation?
The appropriate public administration.
The different regions of Spain, through their departments of education and employment, perform the relevant procedures of evaluation and accreditation of professional competences. In these departments the dates, venues and competency units that can be accredited for certification of professionalism are determined.
All this …. Why?
Because, innumerable Yoga centers and schools, are trying to associate what the administration has set for the professional qualifications and subsequent professional certification, with the different training courses that they offer.
At no time (as of the time of writing) has the legislation developed a training program for Yoga instruction, integrated into the overall educational plans. So, today (at the time of writing), the teaching of Yoga falls strictly in the field of non-formal education i.e. self accredited, far from any possibility of official recognition or approval, other than the professional accreditation criteria.
What Training Courses in Yoga?
All Training Courses in Yoga are developed by taking into account the criteria of each school or association.
The government, through its competent bodies, established its Professional Qualification System, the Professional Certification in Yoga Instruction, that may be proven by evaluating the acquired knowledge and experience, taking into account the units competition designed to effect.
If the experience and training acquired are insufficient to reach the fixed units of competence, one may undergo the required training modules designed for this purpose.
Does all this confuse you!
There is no formal system of training for Yoga instruction, or any such accreditation given by the Community of Madrid. It may exist in the future, but for now everything is waiting for final approval of the ‘professional certificate’ in question.
Therefore, the establishment of a ‘Professional Certification’ provides a teaching associated with the performance of work activity and the validation of the proposed experience to determine training practice.
Currently, Yoga Training is considered non-formal teaching. Their instruction is determined by their own qualifications, as established by the different training centers. They are not validated by the state and do not constitute regulated diplomas. It is considered teaching and learning outside of mandatory or formal education.
